Chemestry class wasn't all that bad except for I couldn't really talk about the Babcock ranch because it's more of a biology concern than a chemestry one...so again I have to find another article for Thursday...oh well such is life.
University Ecology club meeting was today. We talked about several different things, such as events for Environmental Education week, ways to raise funds to save, you guessed it, the Babcock Ranch and that we should be writing in the paper with stuff that is going on in the club in order to have more of a presence on campus.
The Phoenix made a rare proposal...and anyone that knows her knows that this is true. I sing...but not necessarily for public...however, I proposed myself in doing a benefit concert for the Babcock Ranch since this is one of the last pristine places in Florida and since this will complete a wildlife coridor from Lake Okeechobee to Charlotte Harbor. I have never done a full concert before so I'm somewhat nervous about the whole thing. However I'm comfortable with stepping outside my comfort zone because of the cause I am doing it for. I feel since I've done research on the Panthers and know their plight that I should do everything I can to help them. I sort of feel an obligation, not in a bad way though, to do this. It just feels right...and through this I will be helping not just the panthers, but future generations of animals and humans as well. I already have a friend who said he would be glad to rehearse things with me...now I need to find people to play with me...and I need to maybe put together some of my owm songs.
I am willing, however, to perform others works if others are willing to write for me, and give me a sense of what tune you would like to have it put to. This doesn't go just for local peeps either. So the phoenix sings for Florida....a rare thing indeed, but This just seems like the thing to do after last night's wonderfulness.
Last night was interesting because I went to something that I had heard of by chance which turned out to be the best thing I've ever done...two hours and four songs later...
I thought it was in the sprint room in Whitakir hall, but it wasn't. It was upstares in the Ball room at the Student Union. There was a girl who was nice enough to get me there. There were papers on the table so that you could write or draw or do whatever and there were musicians, poets and artists there...I'm not sure how many pictures were shown, there was mainly music and poetry.I came in at the end of a poem and sat down. There was a girl who did Leonard Coen's "Hallaluja
She also did some of her own stuff. She was pretty good, but she did remind me a lot of Jewel. Just the way she sang...her voice sounded like juel's soo damn much. She was a little nazel on her longer notes, but otherr than that, she was pretty good.
Then there was another girl who did a Dispatch song and she did a lot better than the first one. Katie was her name, and I can't remember the first girl's name.
Then a man got up and di his poem...thaen I went up and did a set of three girlscout songs, Tell Me why, Johnny Rebeck and As the Deer....which remains one of my favorites in that particular set of music. I don't do that one very often anymore, and most of you will know why.
Then the blow away came. THe band that followed me was professional, it is the only way to explain them.....wow! The vocalist was great, the base player was just...mmmmmm...and the drummer obviously knew his way around the kit. The vocalist did poems to the drum and base, doing a slow rap....damn they make it look so easy!!! Someone else rapped as well, and them the same vocalist did a beat styal type of poem which was absolutely brilliant.
I am so glad I went before them because, Gods and bright Havens, that would have been a damn hard act to follow. As it was they played us out.
After that I found out about a creative writing club which of course I would like to become involved in. They say meetings will be at seven o'clock on Mondays, but we'll see how that goes when more people get involved in it. It'll be nice to finally have a community of writers here that meet regularly.
I took a ride home with some nice people and proceeded to not do any homework for the rest of the night...and e nded up in bed at about quarter to one after all was said and done. but....damn what a night!
